Use Your Scraps!!!

Hello Friends!

Today’s card #1 was inspired by a picture in the Stampin’ Up ’20 – ’21 Annual Catalog, page 100, using products from the Playing With Patterns Suite.  The picture in the catalog features one of the mini-Paper Pumpkin boxes that’s included in the suite, but I just really liked the bold, bright colors used and opted to mimic that picture, modifying it into a card with some little changes.

I was thrilled with the Playful Alphabet Dies in the new catalog, probably because I love words.  I know that likely sounds funny to most, but it’s true.  English classes were always my favorite subject in school from grade-school on, and spelling just came naturally to me.  I loved spelling bees and competed at a county level more than once.

And, I love, love, love different fonts.  Back in the “olden days” when the internet was new, one of the first things I stumbled upon was free fonts… oh my!  How the world just opened up and sang to me!  I don’t even want to look to see how much memory on my computer hard drive is occupied by fonts….let’s just say, I have a few to choose from when I sit down in front of my computer!

The Playful Alphabet Dies are just simple block letters, but boy do they make a statement on a card.  They pop right off the page at you, no other fancy image necessary to grab your attention!  So much fun!  This metal dies set includes multiples of the “popular” letters, making it so simple to lay out what you want to say and cut the letters all at once.

As noted in the second card below, the negative space can be used also for a whole different look which is so fun!  While Stampin’ Up didn’t ask me what I wanted, they certainly read my mind with the Playful Alphabet Dies!  A huge thank you to the Stampin’ Up design team for this one!!!

The Playful Patterns stamp set that’s bundled with the dies is a whole lotta fun also.  The background for my card base was stamped out in coordinating colors for fun patterns and the rest of the card design was based on that!

As far as the second card, it was made with leftovers from the first card, another stamped background on DSP, and a bit of ribbon!  DONE! I’ll admit it was sort of an afterthought, or I might have been more careful in lining up my letter dies for the first card.  But the way it is, gives it a bouncy, playful, “quirky” look that’s just kind of fun!

So now let’s get down to some INKY business!

Card #1:

Colors and Measurements:

  • Whisper White CS (cardstock) for card base cut at 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ – score at 4 1/4″ and fold in half.  Using a bone folder will make your crease nice and crisp, by the way!
  • Calypso Coral CS for embossed panel cut at 2 1/2″ x 4″ – run through Cut & Emboss Machine in the Dainty Diamonds Embossing Folder.
  • Night of Navy CS 2 3/4″ x 3 3/4″
  • Playing With Patterns Designer Series Paper (DSP)

Let’s Put It Together:

  • Stamp the background design with stamps from Pattern Play onto the Whisper White CS card front using Crushed Curry, Night of Navy, and Calypso Coral inks.  I left the middle blank, as I knew it would be covered up.
  • Run the Calypso Coral panel through the Cut & Emboss Machine in the Dainty Diamonds Embossing Folder and adhere in the center of the card front.
  • REMINDER!  The new Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine will be available for order on September 1 – YAY!  Take a look at it in the ’20-’21 Annual Catalog, page 170.  I can’t wait to get mine… it folds up when not in use – Love that!!!
  • Cut the Crushed Curry DSP from Playing With Patterns DSP in five 3/4″ strips.
  • Cut the Night of Navy oval frame using the Layered Ovals Dies, and the “HI!” using Playful Alphabet Dies.  Cut the “HI!” from the center oval for use on Card #2.
  • Now lay the Crushed Curry DSP strips across the front of the card in a random diagonal pattern, running a couple of them over/under the Night of Navy oval frame.  Adhere all down when happy with layout.  Don’t worry about the ends of the DSP hanging over the card front, as we’ll trim those off with scissors when all is glued down!
  • Adhere your die-cut letters to the center of the oval.
  • Now using the second and third-largest dies from Stitched Rectangle Dies, make the frame out of the Calypso Coral DSP and adhere over the top of all.
  • For the inside of the card, I simply used the remaining Calypso Coral DSP from which my card front frame was cut from, trimmed the sides down using my paper trimmer, and adhered to the inside to finish it off in a lovely fashion!  Save the center rectangle piece for use on Card #2.

Card #2:

Colors & Measurements:

  • Night of Navy cut at 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ for card base.  Score and fold at 4 1/4″.
  • Playing With Patterns DSP cut at 5 1/4″ x 4″
  • The Calypso Coral DSP is the center of the rectangle “frame” from card #1
  • The Night of Navy oval with HI! is the center oval from card #1 from which the letters were cut for card #1.

Let’s Put It Together!

  • Stamp the “sparkle” stamp from Playful Patterns stamp set in Night of Navy ink around the edges of the Playing With Patterns DSP and then adhere to card base front.
  • Adhere the Night of Navy ribbon from the Playing with Patterns Ribbon Combo Pack to the right side of the Calypso Coral DSP rectangle saved from card #1.  Tie a bow and adhere to top right corner of ribbon.
  • Run the saved “HI!” oval through Cut & Emboss Machine in the Dainty Diamonds Embossing Folder and adhere to front of card!

Just like that, a second card utilizing the scraps from card #1!

Until next time,

Janet
